DSE ENG Paper 3 Part B
DSE Listening & Integrated Tasks

What is Fostering? Temporarily caring for an abandoned dog (short-term or weekends). Helps you understand the responsibilities involved. Benefits of Fostering: Compatibility Check: Every dog has its own personality; fostering shows if the dog suits your family. Example: Lucy found her foster dog didn’t like children, so adoption wasn’t suitable. Lifestyle Test: Helps first-time pet owners see if dog care fits their routine. Example: Jason realized he couldn’t manage a big dog due to work schedule. Conclusion: Fostering reduces risk of wrong decisions and ensures both owner and dog are happy. 📢 Part One – Individual Presentations Why Fostering Helps You Choose the Right Dog. Fostering helps you test compatibility before adoption. (Jessica Hsuan) fostered two senior dogs during Super Typhoon Ragasa in Hong Kong, September 2025, and adopted one when she realized it suited her family perfectly. Fostering shows if your lifestyle fits dog ownership. Many people in Hong Kong join SPCA or HKDR weekend fostering programs to see if they can manage daily walks and care alongside long working hours. Fostering promotes adoption culture. (Venus Tang) fostered dogs and shared her experience on social media, encouraging thousands of followers in Hong Kong to consider “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” Even short-term fostering makes a difference. (Hailey Chan) fostered a rescue dog for several months and helped it find a permanent home through a local Hong Kong animal rescue group. Local shelters encourage fostering as a trial. (HKDR) launched the “Foster First” campaign in Hong Kong to reduce abandonment by letting families try living with a dog before adopting. 2013 UE Oral 題目 1-1B: Adopt a dog 🎨 Passage Theme Adopting dogs as a responsible and compassionate alternative to buying. 📖 Passage Summary Adoption allows choosing dogs of different breeds and ages, including adult dogs that need less care than puppies. Puppies require training, socialization, and vaccinations, which can be time-consuming and costly. Adopting an adult dog can save time and reduce hassle. Adoption helps save abandoned dogs from being euthanized due to lack of resources. Owners must understand the responsibilities: dogs need daily time, commitment, and suitable living conditions. Adoption is a good choice for those prepared to make the necessary commitment. 📢 Part One – Individual Presentations Adopt a Dog – Why Adoption Matters Adoption saves lives by preventing euthanasia.Every year, thousands of abandoned dogs in Hong Kong face euthanasia. By adopting from SPCA Hong Kong (香港愛護動物協會), you give a dog a second chance. Adopting an adult dog is convenient and cost-effective.At Hong Kong Dog Rescue (香港狗狗拯救會) in Tai Po, many adult dogs are already vaccinated and microchipped, saving time and money compared to raising a puppy. Adoption supports local rescue charities.Choosing adoption helps groups like Sai Kung Stray Friends (西貢浪浪之友) and LAP Lifelong Animal Protection (LAP 動物保護協會) continue their rescue work. Hong Kong celebrities promote adoption culture.Joe Ma (馬德鐘) adopted a dog named Rocky from SPCA, and Gregory Rivers (河國榮) adopted nine rescue dogs in one year to raise awareness. Creative adoption events make it easier to adopt. In 2024, SPCA Hong Kong (香港愛護動物協會) hosted a “Dog Adoption Date” event in Sheung Wan, using a swipe-style app to match adopters with dogs. 2013 UE Oral 題目 1-1C: Pet shop pros and cons 🎨 Passage Theme Buying dogs from pet shops: convenience vs ethical concerns. 📖 Passage Summary Pros: Easy and convenient to buy from local pet shops. Many shops offer a variety of breeds, making it simple to find a specific type of dog. Possible to compare prices between shops. Membership deals may provide discounts on dog supplies. Cons: Dogs in pet shops often come from breeding centers focused on profit, not animal welfare. Breeding conditions can be poor: overcrowded, unsocialized, and unhealthy environments. Overbreeding can lead to genetic illnesses, poor health, and undesirable personality traits. Pet shop breeders may lack knowledge and care about long-term health and behavior. Experts recommend buying from reputable breeders instead, who ensure good traits, health, and early socialization. 📢 Part One – Individual Presentations Pet Shop – Pros and Cons Convenience and variety of breeds.Pet shops in Hong Kong make it easy to find specific breeds like Chow Chow. For example, many stores in Mong Kok (旺角) and Causeway Bay (銅鑼灣) specialize in popular breeds. Membership deals and discounts.Large chains such as Q-Pets (Q寵) offer loyalty programs and discounts on supplies when you buy your dog there. Risk of unethical breeding practices. Some pet shop dogs come from puppy mills where dogs are kept in cramped conditions and bred too often, leading to poor health and genetic issues. Lack of socialization and health guarantees.Puppies from pet shops may not be properly socialized and can develop behavioral problems. Health records are sometimes incomplete or unreliable.   Better alternative: reputable breeders.Experts recommend going directly to reputable breeders who can show the puppy’s family history and ensure good temperament and health. 2013 UE Oral 題目 1-1D: Share a dog

DSE English Paper 1 Vocab 概覽 2025 2024 2023 2022 Root of Words Root of Words / Prefixes / Suffixes Root of Words(詞根) 詞根(Root of Words)是單字的核心部分,承載主要意義,通常源自拉丁語或希臘語。例如,詞根 bio 表示「生命」,因此 biology(生物學)、biography(傳記)都與生命相關;詞根 spect 表示「看」,所以 inspect(檢查)、spectator(觀眾)都與「看」有關。 常見的後綴包括名詞化的 -tion(動作或狀態)、-ness(性質),以及形容詞化的 -ful(充滿)、-less(沒有)。 此外,奇怪現象也會出現,如 conduct(行為)與 conduit(管道)雖含相同詞根,卻意思不同。 Root Word Meaning Examples Explanation a/n not, without atheist, anonymous atheist = 無神論者;anonymous = 匿名的 ab/s from, away, off absent, abduct absent = 缺席;abduct = 綁架 act do action, actor action = 行動;actor = 演員 aer/o air aeroplane, aerobic aeroplane = 飛機;aerobic = 有氧的 ambi both ambidextrous, ambiguous ambidextrous = 雙手靈巧;ambiguous = 模糊不清 aud/i hear audio, audience audio = 聲音;audience = 觀眾 auto self autograph, automatic autograph = 親筆簽名;automatic = 自動的 bene good benefit, benevolent benefit = 好處;benevolent = 仁慈的 bio life biology, biography biology = 生物學;biography = 傳記 chron/o time chronology, synchronize chronology = 年代學;synchronize = 同步 cred believe credible, credit credible = 可信的;credit = 信用 cide/cise cut, kill homicide, incision homicide = 殺人;incision = 切口 corp/o body corporation, corpse corporation = 公司;corpse = 屍體 cosm/o universe cosmos, cosmopolitan cosmos = 宇宙;cosmopolitan = 世界性的 dict speak predict, dictionary predict = 預測;dictionary = 字典 duc/t lead conduct, educate conduct = 引導;educate = 教育 dur lasting durable, duration durable = 耐用的;duration = 持續時間 dyn/a power dynamic, dynasty dynamic = 動態的;dynasty = 王朝 fac/t make, do factory, manufacture factory = 工廠;manufacture = 製造 fid faith confide, fidelity confide = 信任;fidelity = 忠誠 fract/frag break fracture, fragment fracture = 骨折;fragment = 碎片 gen birth generate, genetics generate = 產生;genetics = 遺傳學 geo earth geology, geography geology = 地質學;geography = 地理學 grad/gress step progress, graduate progress = 進步;graduate = 畢業 graph/y write autograph, biography autograph = 親筆簽名;biography = 傳記 hydr/o water hydrate, hydrogen hydrate = 補水;hydrogen = 氫 imag likeness image, imagination image = 圖像;imagination = 想像力 inter between international, interact international = 國際的;interact = 互動 jud law judge, judicial judge = 法官;judicial = 司法的 juven young juvenile, rejuvenate juvenile = 少年的;rejuvenate = 使年輕 loc place location, allocate location = 位置;allocate = 分配 log/o word, study logic, biology logic = 邏輯;biology = 生物學 lumin light illuminate, luminous illuminate = 照亮;luminous = 發光的 magn great magnify, magnificent magnify = 放大;magnificent = 壯麗的 mal bad malfunction, malice malfunction = 故障;malice = 惡意 man/i/u hand manual, manipulate manual = 手冊;manipulate = 操控 micro small microscope, microchip microscope = 顯微鏡;microchip = 微晶片 mort death mortal, immortal mortal = 會死的;immortal = 不死的 multi many multiply, multimedia multiply = 乘;multimedia = 多媒體 nov new novel, innovate novel = 小說/新的;innovate = 創新 opt best optimal, optimize optimal = 最佳的;optimize = 優化 path feeling sympathy, empathy sympathy = 同情;empathy = 共感 ped foot pedal, pedestrian pedal = 踏板;pedestrian = 行人 phon/o sound telephone, microphone telephone = 電話;microphone = 麥克風 photo light photograph, photosynthesis photograph = 照片;photosynthesis = 光合作用 port carry transport, portable transport = 運輸;portable = 可攜帶的 psych/o mind psychology, psychic psychology = 心理學;psychic = 心靈的 rupt break interrupt, rupture interrupt = 打斷;rupture = 破裂 scrib/script write describe, manuscript describe = 描述;manuscript = 手稿 spect see inspect, spectator inspect = 檢查;spectator = 觀眾 struct build construct, structure construct = 建造;structure = 結構 tele far telephone, television telephone = 電話;television = 電視 vid/vis see video, vision video = 影片;vision = 視覺 voc voice vocal, advocate vocal = 聲音的;advocate = 提倡 zo/o animal zoo, zoology zoo = 動物園;zoology = 動物學 完整版
